"Give Me eyes to See"

Poetry-Entitled:" Grandmother"   Written : 27/2/2013

Do I call you "abuela?"
For the marks of Aztecan,Toltecan, and Mayan traces that run across your face
To the fine lines that glisten only in the sun around your brows and cheeks
Like a tribal clan with marching feet, they move down to your hands
That are used to express your thoughts
Of anger,fear,happiness,you hold so close.
Fingers that wrap around the sides of your face
To mend an unraveled sari piece
Time ticking away through this space
Separating you and I because of our worlds.
Thirteen.
Tock...tock
The rocking chair moving rapidly into your words
Unspoken.
The gods  couldnt help you for all you knew but it was your choice the same
Loving you was without comprehension
Your grey eyes that pace after my words
Beneath linen curtains, unearth the love we once knew.

In writing this poem,I realised how much emphasis I placed and continue to place on physical characteristics in people. While talking with a friend recently, it was clear to me that I wasn't the only one with this perpetual cause. I view each person differently, embracing what is embodied in them and choosing to highlight it because I know what God did for me. "And they shall be Mine, says the Lord of hosts, in that day when I publicly recognize and openly declare them to be My jewels (My special possession, My peculiar treasure)".-Malachi 3:17
While it's true that it is often good to embrace the physical features we have been created with by the Uncreated Himself, issues arise when we focus on those alone. Gentle reminders this week also point to the fact that it is crucial we in the faith, dont look to others in this manner either. The very Scriptures refer to a God who "looks at the heart, not at man's appearance" (1 Samuel 16:7) and while we cannot quite extract our pupils or Oculomotor nerves,we can control or place emphasis on the things that in actuality,do  matter to us, our God and body in Christ.
I have resolved to praying about what is placed in front of me from now on. I know a God who looks at the heart's (Greek: 'kardia') condition. If we look at the meaning of the 'heart',it is often closely connected to  its neighbour, the intellect which is,ultimately more interesting. Rather,we should consider one's intellect instead of focusing on  their "hottness"/"sexiness" physical stature, eyes, the smoothness of one's hair. To use the heart in efforts of making decisions,it means one must purpose or set their attention on something. So although utilising our eyes in the moment of things is only natural and often times, the easiest route; we shouldnt. We must consciously decide to give our attentions elsewhere...like that intellect again.
So as I go through this week, I want to be seen in God's eyes as someone after His own heart, someone whose purposed within herself to fulfill God's will for me and know that the person sitting next to me or standing in the line deserves to be looked at the same.
